With a deep history steeped in European culture and influences, it's no surprise that American opera began in New Orleans, Louisiana of all places. Dating back to at least 1796, operatic performances have been hosted and celebrated yearly in the Crescent City from theater to theater. Today, the New Orleans Opera finds its home in the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts, named after the late, great, New Orleans-born gospel singer.
Just a stone's throw away from the heart of the French Quarter and nestled in Louis Armstrong Park, New Orleans' opera lovers are invited to mosey on over for a fun-filled night of games and music in the Mahalia Jackson Theater on Wednesday, June 1. Here, the New Orleans Opera will be hosting a lively opportunity for drama and music connoisseurs alike to play for a chance to win a pair of tickets for the Opera's 2022-2023 Season.
The event will begin with a happy hour at 5:00 p.m., where free drinks and snacks will be graciously provided to all attendees. Opera music, of course, will set a most fitting ambience, with mezzo-soprano singer Zara Zemmels taking centerstage at 5:30 p.m., accompanied by pianist Carol Rausch. Partygoers can roam the theater, check out the view from seat to seat, and possibly even find some New Orleans Opera merchandise and goodies along the way.
Games and prizes will take place throughout the course of the night, but the big event will culminate in a drama-filled and competitive round of musical chairs, that all are invited to participate in! The final player to take a seat wins a pair of tickets for the 2022-2023 Opera Season, gifted by the New Orleans Opera.
Players that are not so successful in the game of musical chairs have no need to fret. Tickets for the upcoming season go on sale the same night as the event, and attendees are welcome and encouraged to find a seat with the New Orleans Opera for one, some, or all of their new shows.
