When her son graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2018, Cara Koscinski ordered a cake from Publix to celebrate. Koscinski filled out the order online and said the online order box didn’t like the word “cum” in the Latin phrase and substituted it with hyphens.

Koscinski even explained the order box’s mistake in the “Special Instruction” section of the order form, specifying the word to not be inappropriate, but Latin.

The celebratory cake read, “Congrats Jacob! Summa --- Laude Class of 2018,” omitting the Latin word for “with” out of the common phrase. Koscinski complained and received a refund and a Publix gift card.
