PRODUCT is sure to be a confounding release for those unfamiliar with PC MUSIC. For reference, the physical record is shipped with a “silicon product” akin to a dildo. It’s a singles collection, not an album. And if you’re not already familiar with SOPHIE’s aesthetic, then PRODUCT will be a trip. Chirpy, girlish voices are juxtaposed against deep, dubstep beats lending to an effect that’s Spears meets Mohawke. The songs that work best here are the initial singles: “BIPP”, “HARD”, and “LEMONADE.” The additional songs are a bit superfluous. “L.O.V.E.” has a high-pitched melody that’s too off-putting and “MSMSMSM” doesn’t quite make an impression. Though, “JUST LIKE WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE,” the closing electronic ballad, does best at blending the producer’s love for hyper-pop and subversive tendencies.
