A couple from Slidell has broken the record for growing the largest and heaviest grapefruit in the world. With the help of their six grandchildren, Doug and Mary Beth Meyer grew the fruit above the children’s fairy garden, which they claim aided the growth of the citrus.

They bought the potted grapefruit tree years ago and planted it in their backyard. Their grandson first spotted the massive fruit, and the couple then contacted Guiness World Records and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.

On January 19, the fruit was certified as the heaviest grapefruit ever record, weighing in at 7 lbs, 14.7 ounces, as well as the largest, at almost 29 inches in circumference.

The couple plans to put a book together for their grandchildren to commemorate this wonderful event, which they will title “The Fairy Garden and the Grapefruit.”
