Red Bull's Dance Your Style's Crescent City stop was a night to remember. The
touring one-on-one street dance competition came to New Orleans this past
Saturday, August 3rd. Sixteen gifted dancers, including three New
Orleans locals, strut their stuff at Generation Hall for a chance to compete in the
U.S. Final in Las Vegas. Dance Your Style is a battle concept where street dancers of
all disciplines are invited to prove their finesse. Unlike most street
competitions, there are no judges and no choreography. Dance
Your Style is about the individual dancer's ability to act in the moment and
wow the crowd, with the winner of each battle determined by the audience.
The competition was fierce but Marquez "Spider" Alexander
from Memphis, Tennessee distinguished himself from the very beginning with his gravity-defying moves. Alexander defeated "Robo Steve," "Sheik Winn," and "Dassy," to face off with Nick Fury, a smooth stepper representing New Orleans.
Just before the final showdown, Queen of Bounce Big Freedia put
on an inspired performance, showing off her own signature moves and turning up the crowd up with a few of her hits.
The battle between Nick Fury and Marquez "Spider"
Alexander was tight, with a final tie-breaker round called the determine the ultimate victor. In the end, it was
Marquez "Spider" Alexander who came out on top. "I'd like to thank God," said
Alexander, trophy in hand. And indeed, his prowess does seem a bit like divine intervention,
along with years of hard work. Marquez "Spider" Alexander's New Orleans victory means he'll
be competing at the National Final in Las Vegas. Winners from the Red Bull
Dance Your Style U.S. National Final will advance to the World Final, to be
held this October in Paris. We'll be looking for you, Spider!
