Polica and Pony Bwoy brought their unique takes on trip-hop to Gasa Gasa Sunday night to a near sold out crowd. Pony Bwoy and Polica both hail from Minnesota, but that’s where the similarities end. The duo of Jeremy Nutzman and Hunter Morley relied heavily on pre-programmed computer beats, which were melodic and bass driven. Their brief set served as the perfect appetizer for the main set.
If you came to Gasa Gasa expecting a set like the last time the band played in town at One Eyed Jacks, you would have been deeply disappointed. This time around, the band was making a few stops before getting to Texas, where thy plan on recording a new album. With that in mind, the band opted to play a set of almost all new material, aside from two tracks off their debut, Give You the Ghost. Having not seen the band before, it was a little disappointing, but also great to get a preview of the material that will end up on the new album. If you like their second album Shulamith, you’ll really enjoy the new tracks - the mood seems to have carried over. It will be interesting to see how Channy Leaneagh’s vocals will be represented on the new album as there tends to be a lot of processing involved.
