Nicolas Cage has been in the business for a long time and
has played almost every conceivable role. From the devil's bounty hunter to a
man on a quest to steal the Declaration of Independence, Cage has done it. Known
for his meme-able content and cult creations, Cage works on multiple films a
year, though his last major theatrical release was just under a decade ago.
According to Esquire, in a new Lionsgate film, The
Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nicolas Cage has a bizarre new role: He's
going to be playing Nicolas Cage. This meta movie has it all: kidnapping, a
drug kingpin, the CIA, a strained father-daughter relationship, and Nicolas
Cage's past-self berating him for his failures as an actor. And it honestly
might be so crazy, it's good.
The rundown of the movie is that an indebted Cage is trying
to be cast in a Quentin Tarantino film, but while doing so, he makes an
appearance at a Mexican billionaire's birthday for some extra cash. In a twist,
the billionaire is actually a drug kingpin and has kidnapped the daughter of a
presidential candidate. Cage must repair his relationship with his daughter and
ex-wife while spying for the CIA, while writing a script with the billionaire,
and also while saving the kidnapped daughter. All in a day's work for the
actor.
The film is set to be released in 2021 and was written as a
sort of homage to Cage by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten. The two wrote it as a
"love letter" to the actor, and the film is said to include allusions to Cage's
past work.
