The Poydras Corridor Sculpture, presented by the Helis Foundation, has recently announced its expansion which includes two new monumental sculptures.

"Love is Like the Sea…"

The Poydras Corridor Sculpture is the south's leading rotating sculpture exhibition. It features 14 sculptures created by both local and internationally renowned artists.

The first new sculpture that installed is entitled "Love is Like the Sea," by Allison Janae Hamilton. While having grown up in the American South, Hamilton is able to draw on upon her upbringing by incorporating themes of justice, landscape, and mythology into her sculptures and her many other art forms. She is an awarded artist with her work being exhibited at locations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian National Portrait gallery in Washington D.C. Hamilton's extraordinary artworks resemble a beautiful interweaving of the epic with the everyday, in ways that are both haunting and breathtaking.

Hamilton's work of art can be seen between Tchoupitoulas and Constance Street, across from Mother's restaurant. The sculpture features three columns of stacked tambourines cast with bronze. The towers explore the joining of environmental crises and cultural history with the usage of discarded tambourines, natural materials, and other elements. This sculpture draws from the history of hurricanes that have devastated her home state of Florida, an experience known to many in South Louisiana.

More Art to Come

The second new installation will be presented later this summer. The sculpture is created by George Dunbar and is promised to be nothing short of incredible. Dunbar is a New Orleans local artist who received the Governor's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 for his contributions to art and culture in Louisiana. His art has been exhibited all over the world. Some of his most impressive work locally includes his one-man show of his work, "George Dunbar: Elements Of Chance", showcased at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2016.
