Calling all readers! There's a great opportunity happening at the New Orleans Public Library this month. The New Orleans Public Library will be celebrating National Library Card Sign-up Month this September. They are offering prizes to readers who signs up or renews their NOPL membership in person.
National Library Card Sign-up Month this September
From September 1 until September 30, stop by any of the Library's 15 locations to participate. New and existing NOPL members with expired cards are eligible to participate.
Since 1987, the American Library Association has hosted Library Card Sign-up month to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month of September, libraries join together to encourage every child to sign up for their own library card.
During the school year, public librarians and library staff offer assistance to parents and caregivers to help them save hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. This assistance includes free access to STEAM programs/activities, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help and technology workshops with the expertise of librarians. A library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available.
"We have so many fantastic resources for all ages," Deputy Director Tamyka Miles said. "In addition to valuable educational resources, we offer professional development tools, music and music streaming, free programs across a variety of interests and topics, and so much more. We believe libraries are an essential part of all communities, and we encourage all New Orleanians to sign up," says Deputy Director Tamyka Miles.
"To me, it's a no-brainer. A New Orleans Public Library card offers so much beyond traditional lending services - including free seed libraries, tool borrowing, and even entry into premier museums and cultural attractions," says Shannan Cvitanovic, executive director of the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library. "I truly believe a Library card is the best card you could ever have in your wallet, and I, personally, never leave home without it," says Cvitanovic.
