Regretting You (2025)
Based on the novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover (It Ends With Us), Regretting You tells the story of Clara (McKenna Grace) and her family. Her mom Morgan (Allison Williams) had her at 18 with her high school sweetheart Chris (Scott Eastwood). Clara is also close with her aunt Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald), who recently had a baby with her boyfriend Jonah (Dave Franco).
Chris and Jenny are killed in a car accident, and it quickly becomes apparent to their grieving partners that they were having an affair. They decide to keep it a secret from Clara so she won't lose respect for her dad and her aunt. In the meantime, Clara is falling for an aspiring film student (Mason Thames), but her mom does not approve of the match.
Unfortunately, the story meanders along for its two-hour runtime. There're also tonal issues. The weightiness of its themes of grief, loss, and betrayal often clashes awkwardly with the rom-com aspects of the film. Also, there are flashback scenes where viewers are asked to believe the late-30s Williams and Franco as high schoolers.
The best part of the film is Grace in the lead. She has done a good job of headlining Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters movies, and she should have a bright future ahead of her.
Regretting
You is
inoffensive, but it is likely only to appeal to hardcore Hoover fans and maybe
some teen romance fans.
