Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas just received a very special gift to celebrate his record-setting 2019 season. The football star took to Instagram on Wednesday to show off a pair of beautiful black and gold customized Air Jordan 1 cleats, complete with various nods to his incredible season.
The cleats' black and gold detailing, along with the fleur de lis pattern on the iconic Nike swoosh, pays tribute to the Big Easy where the Who Dat' Nation reigns. The front flap of the shoe reads "149/rec", representing the impressive record set by Thomas this year to achieve the most receptions in a single NFL season, handily surpassing the previous record held by Marvin Harrison in 2002. The inside flap of the shoe also reads "NFL single season receptions record" in all caps. The heel of the shoe features Thomas' notorious social media handle "Can't Guard Mike", which has become a mantra rooted in reality for #13 during his three years with the New Orleans Saints, where he has become one of the most dominant wide receivers in the entire NFL.
The former Ohio State player was drafted by the Saints in the second round in 2016, and has emerged as one of the Saints' most valuable receivers in an offense-heavy team. In addition to his 2019 receptions record, he also holds the NFL record for the most receptions by a player during his first four seasons with 470 yards. Thomas is also a three time Pro Bowl player and was selected as the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year.
Despite a disappointing overtime loss to the Vikings in the Wild Card playoffs, Thomas' dominant performance on the field gave Saints fans something to be proud of. With his new customized Jordan's, Thomas is set to return to the field in true "Can't Guard Mike" fashion.
