A Pennsylvania town is celebrating the Martian New Year on June 18. The town north of Pittsburgh, named Mars, is hosting events sponsored by NASA, with the goal of encouraging space exploration. Mars has embraced its unusual name, placing a giant flying saucer in the town square, and the Mars Area High School has named its teams the Fightin’ Planets.

The Martian New Year occurs approximately every two earth years, with the next one on May 5, 2017.
