Longue Vue's Family Equality Day 2026

As Pride celebrations begin to take place across New Orleans, an Uptown institution is creating a space for families of every background to gather, celebrate, and feel recognized.

On Sunday, May 31, Longue Vue House and Gardens will host its 11th annual Family Equality Day, creating a daylong celebration centered on LGBTQ+ families, inclusivity, and connection. The event is free and has become a staple of New Orleans' Pride programming, combining live entertainment, children's activities, resources, and cultural events in a environment designed for all ages.

Celebrating All Families

Family Equality Day is a free Pride-centered event created to honor and recognize families "of all shapes, sizes, and identities," with a particular emphasis on LGBTQ+ families and allies. Held outside across Longue Vue's grounds, the event reflects an international movement that recognizes diverse family arrangements. International Family Equality Day, observed globally, advocates for the visibility and protection of LGBTQ+ families across the world. Longue Vue's local celebration brings that mission into a New Orleans setting.

Activities for All Ages

This year's event will feature a myriad of family-friendly activities designed to involve both children and adults. Planned activities include story time sessions, dance performances, fan decorating stations, a community resource fair and vendor market, and a children's parade that will move through the gardens.

Organizers say the goal is to create an environment where families are able to celebrate openly while connecting with local resources and organizations. The community partners for the 2026 event include groups such as the LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana, PFLAG New Orleans, the New Orleans Pride Center, the Waldorf School of New Orleans, among others.

The event has grown since its early years. A 2017 description of Family Equality Day highlighted activities such as bounce houses, crafts, and education initiatives that work to support LGBTQ+ parents and children. Today, the festival has become one of Longue Vue's main events, drawing families from all over the region.
