Local artists are salvaging desks and refinishing and decorating them as gifts for Jefferson Parish school children, to give them a place to work while they are being homeschooled during the stay-at-home order.
Holis Hannan came up with the project, now called "Dat Desk NOLA," and is aiming to make at least 50 desks.
Years ago, Hannan's studio and business in Bayou St. John burned down in a warehouse fire, and she feels like she is paying back the support she received from family and friends at the time.
Artist Liz Lund has also joined the project, remembering the support that neighbors and strangers gave her after she evacuated with young children during Hurricane Katrina.
