Attention all high school senior student-athletes of the Greater New Orleans area; now is your time to shine!

Chevron is sponsoring the High School Scholar Athlete of the Week award for student-athletes who are pursuing higher education. Chevron and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation are working together to recognize a male and female high school senior showing success in athletics and academics. Those who are chosen as the scholar-athlete of the week will be recognized at a school assembly, game, or local event and receive an award with those representing the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation.

This opportunity keeps getting better because not only will you receive recognition with your award, but the winners will receive an invitation to a Pelicans basketball game. Make sure to keep those grades up and study all you can, seniors! It'll be worth the $5,000 scholarship drawing at the Pelicans game. Keep in mind, one male and female can take advantage of this opportunity.

According to GNO Sports, eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • High School Senior graduating in May of 2022
  • Resident of the state of Louisiana
  • Participant in high school sports for at least 3 years (including senior year)
  • NOT attending college on a full athletic scholarship
  • Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA

Senior athletes, please remember that two winners will be announced each week until January 24, 2022. Submit your application at GNO Sports.

"As a former teacher, I understand the importance of honoring young men and women for their discipline in both their sport and the classroom," Leah Brown, public affairs manager for Chevron, said. "We've worked with the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation for years and have seen firsthand the tremendous positive influence the organization has on local youth. We know these student athletes will continue to make us proud as they prepare to take the next steps in their academic careers."

With so much fun happening in the city and work becoming available for many people, this is a great time to recognize students fighting against odds to pursue their dreams. Perhaps there aren't enough opportunities like this for young people—but still, it's refreshing to have the spotlight on them. Your families are surely rooting for you to succeed in whatever it is you're involved in. And with a $5,000 scholarship involved, it ought to put some spark inside of you.
