New Orleans is celebrating the eclipse of Thirsty Thursday over National Rum Day (August 16) with a couple of well-known restaurants here to pour up as many fruity cocktails your taste buds can handle! Pineapples liqueur, St. Lucian Spice rum, coconut rum, and coffee liqueur—the rum combinations are plentiful.
Check out these restaurants for rum and cocktail connoisseurs:
Pythian Market (234 Loyola Ave., pythianmarket.com)
Within the historic Pythian Temple, located in the CBD, the community-driven food vendor center is a great place to try out local up-and-coming brands. Try out Bar 1908’s signature rum cocktail, the Bali H’ai @ the Beach for the celebratory day. The cocktail is made with pineapple juice, lime juice, orgeat, pineapple liqueur, and an Eldorado 5-year rum.
Compere Lapin (The Old No. 77 Hotel and Chandlery, 535 Tchoupitoulas St., comperelapin.com)
Featuring creations by the James Beard Award “Best Chef South” Finalist Chef Nina Compton, Compere Lapin invites guests to come and sip on delightfully crafted cocktails. They’ll be serving signature cocktails like the CL Julep (Bourbon, cane syrup, sea salt, mint, St. Lucian Spiced Rum, and Peychaud bitters), the Lucian Bacchanal (spiced syrup, Vida Mezcal, lime, and Chairman’s Reserve Rum), and the Ti’Centennial Punch (which the restaurants allows you to pick from either their Mexican, French, or Louisiana Rhum Agricole, letting you make your own ti’punch!)
Toups South (1504 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., toupssouth.com)
Visit Chef Isaac Toups’ noteworthy eatery and enjoy an array of dishes from the Louisiana region. Make sure to get one of beverage director Bryson Downham’s handcrafted cocktails for the day as well. Their refreshing Hiiii Byeeee cocktail (barsol, stiggin’s pineapple rum, coconut rum, and coffee liquor) is a hit as well as their signature Brunning’s (cranberry, lime, black barrel and overproof rum, and pineapple).
