On Saturday, August 20, Tipatina’s hosted the fourth annual Boyfriend Birthday Bash where the evening’s celebrant held court over a full house, teeming with festive party-goers decked out in their finest skimpy undies and sleepwear, some of which was purchased only minutes before in the pop-up shop upstairs with proceeds going to neighboring flood victims.  Under the banner of “rap cabaret,” Boyfriend commanded the attention from her entrance through the show’s final moments using an arsenal of burlesque dancers, sideshow stunts, drag performers, and multiple wardrobe changes inspired by the theme and spirit of each song’s performance, making each number a completely different, but cohesive, experience.  Ever expanding the concept of rap cabaret, her production has become an impressive showcase for her witty, clever, and, at times, outrageous lyrics and stage presence.  The evening was highlighted by the performance of her recently released collaboration with Big Freedia, “Marie Antoinette, “ which allowed for a brilliant burlesque take on French Royalty including a ten-foot multi-tiered birthday cake set piece emblazoned with the song’s refrain, “Let Them Eat Cake.”
