Following the mass of Spring Breakers partying seaside in Florida,
the state shut down its beaches. But are they now closing their borders
as well? Not quite, but close. Florida has set up hundreds of
highway checkpoints in an attempt to bar New Yorkers from entering the
state.
What happens at the checkpoint is simple: After a driver pulls into the
weigh
station, workers from the Florida Department of Health, Florida
Department of
Transportation, and Florida Highway Patrol will ask where the person's
trip
began and what his or her final destination will be. This excludes
semi-truck
drivers. After this simple protocol, motorists should expect to either
be
cleared to continue on the interstate or screened further.
There has also been discussion of
quarantining those coming from coronavirus hot spots such as New York, New
Jersey, and Connecticut in order to prevent the virus from spreading across the
Florida region. The checkpoints instruct travelers to self-quarantine for 14 days.
Florida Governor Ron Desantis said
that similar measures will be put in place this Friday on Interstate 10 to halt
travel from Louisiana.
