** ½ out of four

Thanks to a successful online crowdfunding campaign, the sequel to 2001's SuperTroopersis here. This time the Broken Lizard comedy troupe (Jay Chandrasekhar, Keven Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske) brings their rude Vermont State Cops to the Canadian border to bust up a drug ring.

I enjoy the first Super Troopers and I appreciate these guys wanting to please their fans, but the new movie is too often loud and obnoxious. Heffernan's character, who is meant to be annoying, is just too annoying at times. And the Canadian Mounties (Tyler Labine, Hayes MacArthur, and Will Sasso) are played way too broad. The same can be said of Rob Lowe's villainous Mayor character.

However, there are some scattered laughs, like the effects on Chandrasekhar after he repeatedly takes female hormone pills or Lemme's Kabuki acid trip. Actor Brian Cox, as the captain of the troopers, got some chuckles out of me because he plays it so perfectly straight. There are smart and funny lines littered throughout, but I just wish that the characters didn't scream at one another so often.

Super Troopers 2 isn't that great, and it even grates on the nerves on occasion, but still, I have a mild affection for it.
