Sir Elton John shined just as bright as the hundreds of rhinestones on his bedazzled blue suit during a stunning Friday evening performance at the Smoothie King Center. Fans sang, danced and reminisced to favorites such as "Benny and the Jets," "Rocket Man," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues"." The 5- piece band performed the hits to perfection, and included Elton John's original drummer from back when the band formed in 1969. The background display synched with each number, providing a captivating visual element to its corresponding song. I chuckled to myself, because after most songs Elton John would stand up and bask in all the audience applause, loving the love New Orleans showered on him. He is still so grateful to his fans that he even stopped mid-show to sign autographs for a lucky few in the front row.
The only drawback was the acoustics. There was a good bit of echo, which made the vocals hard to hear at times. However, if you already knew and loved every word of Sir Elton's songs, that's a minor criticism for a night of unparalleled entertainment. He concluded with "Your Song" - a fitting closer for the night.
Chatter leaving the arena was that this was one of the better shows he's done in our area in recent history. It was a privilege to witness such a timeless entertainer still performing in his prime. Good show!
