What have you been living off this week? Stale crackers and sweaty soda?

Us, too, until we stopped at the Irish House an hour ago, where chef Matt Murphy has brought in a keg-sized generator to power the basics: fresh-griddled sandwiches and soups - and ice. Luscious bucket after bucket of glistening ice, chilling beer bottles and cocktails alike.

Don't expect a proper Guinness on draft - the beer lines are too warm for that - but you might check out this week's specialty cocktail, happily inspired not by disaster but rather LSU's kickoff game against North Texas.

The Purple People Eater, as it's called, is a simple shake of vodka, blue Curaçao, Razzmatazz raspberry liqueur and sour mix, served up.

It's got pretty balance and a festive, jeweled hue, but the biggest appeal on this day is that it's cold, and it's served at a working restaurant, and the chef is smiling and the food is hearty.

The Irish House is at 1432 St. Charles; 595.6755. Before heading over, call or reach them @IrishHouseNOLA.

I hope you & yours got through the storm safely.
