Dirty, Kubrickian Summer

We’re rolling further into August, and events are really starting to heat up; literally and figuratively.

Thursday is your last chance to see the film A Band Called Death about the proto-punk band in the early 1970s that only became popular decades later. The showing is at 9:30 p.m. Catch some live music at Siberia at 10 p.m. with Clockwork Elvis and Rev. Spooky LeStrange’s Billion Dollar Babydolls. That’s not the only Stanley Kubrick-themed event, but more about that later.

The Prytania Theater’s Midnight Movie this week is a little more interactive than usual. You are actually encouraged to sing along to Little Shop of Horror on both Friday and Saturday nights at midnight. The show will be hosted by a live cast, there will be raffles, and you can bring your own booze!

Indie prog-rockers Meta the Man, Logarda, and The Weakness take over One Eyed Jacks at 10 p.m. on Friday night or, if you are jonesing for a beach trip, it’s Surf Night at Banks St. Bar with The Unnaturals, Bruiser’s House of Surf for free at 10 p.m.

Saturday is going to be a hot one at Le Bon Temps Roule when Gravy Flavored Kisses and Hotel Oscar start playing at 10 p.m. The The Unnatuals are back again with Cons and Prose featuring Rock City Morgue’s Rik Slave and Bipolaroid at Tipitina’s at 10 p.m. Cover is $10. If you’re venturing into the French Quarter, you’ll be heading straight into the dirty laundry. Dirty Linen Night kicks off at 6 p.m. as revelers are invited into the galleries and stores of Royal Street past closing time with hors d’ oeuvres and libations. While you’re there, you’ll probably be tempted to head to The House of Blues for L-O-U’s third annual Summer Showcase featuring up and coming rock, pop, and hip hop acts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 the day of the show, and as an added bonus, there will be complimentary shots while they last. You can learn more about the showcase at Loumusik.com.

And finally coming back to Kubrick, his futuristic take on A Clockwork Orange will be showing at the Prytania Theater on Sunday at 10 p.m. during the theater’s The Works of Stanley Kubrick series.

After a few days of rest, head to the AMC Elmwood Palace on Thursday night at 7 p.m. to see the masters behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 take on the sci-fi film Starship Troopers with their hilarious commentary for the live Rifftrax experience. Tickets are only $12, but they may very well sell out!
