COVID-19 Negatively Impacting the Cosmetics Industry

For all our beauty-lovers, coronavirus has presented a unique question: Why go all out getting made up, knowing you'll be wearing a mask wherever you go? Or, just as applicable, why bother putting makeup on when you're spending most of your time these days at home? It's not as fun to apply that special shade of lipstick when it's just you and the cat.

Many of us haven't worn lipstick in weeks. What would be the point? It turns out, there's a huge portion of the female population who are ditching this luxury item. While Global Cosmetics News reports that during the 2008 Great Recession, lipstick sales rose by 11 percent as consumers indulged themselves with the little luxury, that's not the case during the coronavirus. In fact, USA Today reports that this year, sales could decrease by up to 11 percent.

Of course, not everyone is choosing to forego this beauty staple. People are wearing lipstick to Zoom meetings, virtual dates, and for their own enjoyment. And as smudge-resistant lipstick becomes more and more popular, it's likely that it'll be sported under masks. And, of course, if you're hoping for something a little more visible, a bold eyeshadow shows up perfectly above any mask.
