The Got Gumbo Cook-Off hosted by the United Way was fierce. The competition held at the Royal Sonesta on Bourbon Street was filled with competitors vying for the title of Best Traditional, Best Exotic, and Best Seafood Gumbo. Some of the most interesting entries included substituting potato salad for rice, using a ton of butter in the roux, and even flavoring the gumbo with curry powder.

In addition to the delectable gumbo were serveral decadent desserts like a scientific-looking Brandy Milk Punch popsicle.

The biggest announcement of the evening came from United Way and the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation who together will award grants to eligible hospitality industry employees who are suffering from an emergency. The Hospitality Cares partnership will be a huge help to those working people who still live below the poverty line.
