Baryonyx
Lucky Stars
Think Metallica minus the anger and you have something like Baryonyx, a local act exploring the line between heavy, epic rock and psychedelic jam-band instrumentals. Like many talented and ambitious bands, they work best when they aim for less, as on the mystical opener “Lydia Rising,” where the slow and slightly ominous drums bookend nicely with the closing “Near You.” Fans of Black Sabbath and other 70’s metal will enjoy the band’s straining vocals, mythological references and epic scope (yes, there is an organ player), while appreciating the lowered volume. At just seven songs, Lucky Stars is short and bittersweet.
