Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, among Hollywood’s most famous couples, will separate after two years of marriage. A source said that Jolie was the one to officially file, but also claimed that the split is amicable and that they will likely share custody of their six children. The pair have three internationally adopted children, Maddox, Zahara, and Pax. Jolie gave birth to their daughter Shiloh in 2006, and twins Vivienne and Knox were born in July 2008.
Pitt and Jolie were engaged in 2012 and married in a quiet ceremony in 2014 but spent nine years together before finally sealing the deal. Their relationship began in April 2005, after a rumored affair on the set of their sexually-charged action flick Mr. and Mrs. Smith, in which they played a married pair of spies. At the time, Pitt was already in a high-profile marriage with Jennifer Aniston, but he had a reputation for on-set romances, having dated previous co-stars including Juliette Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow. Jolie was no different- she met first husband Jonny Lee Miller in 1999 on the set of Hackers and courted second husband Billy Bob Thornton on-set as well. Jolie divorced Thornton in 2003.
Rumors that sparks flew between the pair were quickly confirmed when Pitt was spotted in Kenya with Jolie and Maddox, less than a month after Aniston filed for divorce. Pitt legally adopted Maddox and Zahara soon after. The pair remained an object of fascination in the media, as Jolie underwent several surgeries to reduce her risk of cancer. Most recently, speculation began that By The Sea, the 2015 film written and directed by Jolie in which the pair play a struggling married couple, might be inspired by strife within their own marriage. Jolie denied that that was the case.
