Alon Shaya's Memories of a Good Meal
Chef Alon Shaya was inspired to weave stories of resilience, suffering, faith, and humanity, and how food plays a role in these moments, into his new book Memories of a Good Meal: Recipes of Resilience Inspired by Stories of World War II Survival.
He premiered the book alongside co-author June Hersh at the National World War II Museum, and they recounted just some of the intriguing stories that provided or inspired the recipes within the book that is as much of a cookbook as it is a historical one. Guests dined on a few of the dishes including Creamy Roasted Chestnut Soup, a meal served to thousands of refugee children taken in by a small French village, and Hungarian Goulash, a recipe saved from the home of family torn away and sent to a death camp.
Memories of a Good Meal is awe-inspiring as it shows the character that food, cooking, and eating together takes on in everyone's life; it's our common denominator.
