Summer is a great time for outdoor activities in the US, but it also brings the issue of mosquitoes. These pesky insects can disrupt any outdoor event, from a backyard BBQ to a road trip. However, some areas in the US are more affected by mosquitoes than others.

Dealing with mosquitoes can be a challenge in different parts of the United States, but some states are worse off than others. At the top of the list is Louisiana, which is known to be the most mosquito-prone state. This is due to the hot and humid summers in the region, which provide the perfect breeding ground for these pesky insects. In fact, the average temperature between May and July in 2022 was 81.3°F. The state also has a high average summer rainfall and a variety of mosquito species, making it a prime spot for mosquitoes to breed and thrive. Florida comes in second place as one of the most mosquito-infested states in the country. The state's high average rainfall and warm temperatures create an ideal environment for mosquitoes to thrive.

Texas is the second largest state in the U.S and is well-known for its warm weather and diverse terrain. However, its humid climate, particularly during the summer months, creates a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Additionally, Texas has a high number of mosquito species, making it one of the top five states in the country where mosquitoes are prevalent. On the other hand, states located out West or in the Northern region, such as Michigan, Nevada, Washington, and Oregon, have fewer mosquitoes, which makes sense considering their drier climates.

A 100-point scale was used to determine the ranking of states based on how prone they are to mosquitoes. This score was based on factors such as average summer temperature, rainfall, number of mosquito species, West Nile cases, and Google searches per 100,000 people related to mosquito prevention. Louisiana and Florida, which have warm and humid climates, took the top two spots, which is not surprising. However, South Dakota's third-place position might come as a surprise to some due to the state's high number of West Nile cases, Google searches, and average summer temperature. New York and Texas claimed the fourth and fifth spots respectively, while Delaware and Nebraska tied for sixth place. The top 10 is rounded out by several Southern states: Georgia at 7th, Alabama at 8th, North Dakota and South Carolina tied for 9th, and North Carolina, Kentucky, and Mississippi at number 10.

Regardless of where you live, protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing protective clothing and using repellent. Enjoy a mosquito-free summer! For more information on charts and stats, visit insuranks.com/states-ranked-by-mosquitoes
