The Son of a Saint mentorship program has been serving the New Orleans area for the last 10 years and is currently seeking more volunteers and mentors. The organization is hosting a mentor and volunteer recruitment happy hour on Thursday, June 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will be hosted by Blue Giant Chinese, at 1300 Magazine St., offering attendees cocktails and light bites throughout the evening.
Son of a Saint was created by Bivian "Sonny" Lee, III in 2011. Lee's father, a defensive back for the New Orleans Saints in the early 1970s, died young in 1984, leaving him and his sister fatherless. As he grew up, Lee was afforded many opportunities to cope with the loss of his father and to continue to grow as an individual that he saw as a unique experience many did not have.
In creating Son of a Saint, Lee aimed "to pay it forward and replicate his own experience for a special group of fatherless young males in the community," according to the Son of a Saint website.
Today, the Son of a Saint organization picks a group of 10 to 12-year-old boys in the New Orleans area whose fathers have either died or been incarcerated to mentor until they are 18. The organization provides them with recreational access, tutoring, tuition assistance at middle and high schools, group and one-on-one mentorship opportunities, and more.
This happy hour event aims to recruit more of those mentors, who are vital to the organization and to creating lasting relationships with these young boys.
This event is open to any men and women interested in volunteering their time with the Son of a Saint organization. Attendees will be introduced to Son of a Saint as an organization and have the opportunity to learn more about how to get involved.
Masks and social distancing will be enforced at the event. Space will be limited due to social distancing.
