Since the Cars franchise earned good box office, excellent merchandising money, and reasonably positive reviews for Disney, they decided to create a Planes franchise, too.

Dane Cook voices Dusty, a crop duster who longs to compete in the worldwide racing circuit. It's standard kiddie movie fare, teaching youngsters the value of following their dreams, not giving up in the face of adversity, etc.

The animation of different exotic locales around the world looks beautiful, but the story is so by-the-numbers, there isn't really much to say about Planes, good or bad.The film definitely lacks the artistry and wit of this summer's superior family options, Monsters University and Despicable Me 2. But on the other hand, it's blandly pleasant and painless and the children in the auditorium I saw it in were thoroughly enjoying themselves, so it's hard to be too negative about it, either.

In the end, it's good time filler for parents looking to get their kids out of the house while avoiding the murderous August heat. But adults looking to get in touch with their inner child would be best served by looking elsewhere.
