*** ½ out of four

Jurassic Park is like an awesome toy. Just wind it up and watch it go. Steven Spielberg's 1993 dinosaurs run amuck movie, based on Michael Crichton's novel, still holds up -and it looks great in 3D.

Billionaire and possible mad man John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) invites a couple of paleontologists (Sam Neill, Laura Dern) and a mathematician (Jeff Goldblum) to preview his extravagant theme park which features real, live dinosaurs cloned from DNA. The tour doesn't go as planned and, in fact, turns very deadly.

There isn't much story here, but the expert way Spielberg ratchets up the suspense and stages the action set pieces gives this thrill ride its gusto. The entire sequence of the T-Rex attacking the stalled jeeps is still heart-pounding.

Jurassic Park comes back to theaters in a converted 3D version. I am always skeptical of conversion jobs, because many look bad (Clash of the Titans remake) or the 3D effect just doesn't work (The Phantom Menace), but it seems they took time and care with Jurassic Park, because the 3D looks very good. The 3D, however, is just a bonus, because the film itself still hold up well.
