This past week, Hilton Hotels New Orleans announced the Grand Opening of their new location, the Canopy. Located in the heart of downtown New Orleans on Tulane Ave, the 14-story lifestyle hotel offers 176 rooms, as well as a cocktail bar/cafe and a unique Creole-Cantonese inspired restaurant. The actual edifice of the hotel served as the former Oil and Gas Building built in 1959, and is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places for its usage of glass, steel, and abstract geometry to create a uniquely box-shaped skyscraper.

The accompanying restaurant, Ginger Roux, was conceived as a nod to the hotel's location in what used to be New Orleans' historic Chinatown district. For over 50 years the area was a thriving hub of commerce for Asian Americans until it was destroyed by the Works Progress Administration in 1937. As a way of paying homage to this near-forgotten history, Chef Jonathan Hostetler has commissioned a menu of truly unique fusion dishes like crawfish boil fried rice, boudin lumpia, gumbo dumplings, and General Tso's alligator.

The Canopy will also be home to The Herbalist, offering assorted cocktails alongside gourmet coffee and tea for those who can't make up their mind. Breakfast will be available as well in the form of fresh pastries, creole treats and more.

Alongside the usual amenities like free breakfast and a lounge, the Canopy will also offer a private patio and complimentary bicycles for all guests. The hotel's staff of "Canopy Enthusiasts" (presumably named for their love of awnings), will be present to assist guests in scheduling city tours and finding the best that New Orleans has to offer.

Part of the Canopy's appeal is its role as the Hilton Hotel's first foray into 'lifestyle branding'. The intention is to create an "authentically local" spot for relaxation that serves as a "natural extension" of the surrounding neighborhood. As of now, it is yet to be confirmed whether this natural extension will include street hustlers and horse cops, but one can safely assume it will be host to many a drunken tourist.
