2001's The Fast and The Furious was a moderately enjoyable B-movie about an undercover cop (Paul Walker) with confl icted loyalties investigating a car theft ring (headed by Vin Diesel). It was Point Break with drag racing replacing surfi ng. Somehow, the franchise is on its 6th fi lm, which is as unlikely as if Point Break had 5 sequels (okay, that is kind of fun to consider).

Walker and Diesel are dragged out of retirement by a lawman (the Rock) to help apprehend a special-ops soldier gone bad (Luke Evans). Complicating matters, Diesel's presumed dead love interest (Michelle Rodriguez) is working for Evans.

Like many bad sequels, this one suffers from an accumulation of characters it carries over from previous fi lms. Everyone needs something to do, so what ideally should have been a tight 90-100 minute thriller infl ates to over 130 minutes. The action (extremely preposterous even by the standards of the genre) mixes awkwardly with sappy scenes about Diesel's dedication to his "family" of thieves.

Chances are, fans of the series will not be dissuaded by a negative review. But if you're on the fence, check out Iron Man 3 or Star Trek: Into Darkness instead.
