End Your Voodoo Fest Weekend on a High Note with Church*: The Voodoo Sermon

To wrap up Voodoo Music + Art Experience weekend on the high note, the masterminds behind the Sunday bass music weekly Church* are returning with their seasonal blowout, Church*: The Voodoo Sermon. This year’s event features Billy Kenny and Doctor Jeep as headliners, plus several other DJs and special guests at The Dragon’s Den this Sunday, October 29.

The evening’s headliner—Leeds, UK, native Billy Kenny—has a sound embodied by a key lyric in “The Hood Girl” off The Hood EP, his latest release to-date: “We came here to vibe / And this beat was made for us / Now watch me in my corner / While I bounce to the chorus.” Billy Kenny’s infectious breed of stylized beats is underpinned by a palpable kinetic energy—even the most stoic of passersby would find an added spring in their step. That energy weaves through each minute decision he makes about every percussive element in his songs—sample a taste on Billy Kenny & Friends, released under his co-run This Ain’t Bristol imprint this past April.

Billy Kenny has also been a part of numerous Dirtybird releases, most recently its Dirtybird Campout West Coast Compilation (October 2017). The 15-track album features Claude VonStroke’s previously unreleased remix of Billy Kenny’s “Barrump:”

As for co-headliner Doctor Jeep, there’s no point in Pidgin-holing this New York-bred artist into any one sub-genre. Even his most recent releases vary distinctly, from the airier, more stab- and sample-focused tracks off his latest Jawbreaker EP (2017) to the deeper, wetter, and wubbier vibes he laid down with Magugu on the Pidgin EP (2016). The title track off his Dissociate EP (2016) also made the festival rounds in summer 2016, which helped further propel the past year of his career.

Other DJs on the Church*: Voodoo Sermon lineup include Anna Morgan (New York City), Calico (Detroit), Sarah Sativa (Atlanta), and a handful of unnamed special guests. Plus, local Church* regulars Unicorn Fukr, Kidd Love, and MC Werd2Jah round out the Sunday evening bill.

Just this month, Dirtybird cofounder Justin Martin headlined another unforgettable night at Church*, including a b2b with Unicorn Fukr after his own set. The usual Church* crowd will be undoubtedly amped for this next showcase curated especially for Voodoo Fest weekend.

Besides the caliber of the artists themselves, extra attendees will likely be in town for festival and upcoming Halloween festivities, so grab tickets soon before they sell out. A limited number of $15 pre-sale tickets are still available here (as of the time of this posting).
