Don’t Miss the Mind-Bending Madness of Flying Lotus in 3D at Joy Theater, Wednesday, November 1

By: Carolyn Heneghan

Still haven’t had your fill of Voodoo and Halloween week entertainment? Flying Lotus has crafted an immersive, 3D multimedia event for everyone still going strong after the past week’s hallowed revelry at the Joy Theater this Wednesday, November 1.

Los Angeles native Steven Ellison, under the stage alias Flying Lotus, has a flair for music and experimentation in his very genetics—he’s the grand-nephew of sax legend John Coltrane. Since his recording debut 1983 (2006), Flying Lotus has released five studio albums of experimental hip-hop and electronic dance music to much critical acclaim. His most recent releases include You’re Dead (2014) under Flying Lotus and the single “Crowned” (2016) under his rap alter-ego Captain Murphy. Ellison has also earned spots on major festival lineups across the world, including New Orleans’s own BUKU Music + Arts Experience in 2013.

But when Flying Lotus hits the Joy Theater, attendees will walk away from much more than the typical concert experience. Flying Lotus has teamed up with L.A.-based 3D Live to create an elaborate, mind-bending journey with 3D visuals and virtual environments that appear to emerge from the screen and mingle with the audience. These visuals accompany the sonic masterpiece Ellison creates live onstage for a multisensory adventure that relatively few will have the opportunity to take. The show premiered at FYF Fest in L.A. earlier this year, but Flying Lotus is now taking the experience on the road across North America this fall.

Direct support for Flying Lotus comes from L.A.-based producer/songwriter Seven Davis Jr, performing tracks from his sophomore effort Live From the Other Side (2016). But the opening set of the night will feature L.A. native and DJ/producer PBDY, who has released music under Flying Lotus’s label Brainfeeder.

This all-ages show starts earlier, with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. and showtime at 8:30 p.m. General admission and VIP tickets are going fast—grab them while you still can here.
