Rush
Friday, July 10, 7:30 PM
New Orleans Arena, 1501 Girod Street, 587-3822
Canadian by birth, possessed of legendary talent and known for fierce individuality, this progressive rock trio with a full concert band sound was formed in August 1968. Rush founding members are Alex Lifeson (guitar) and Lead Vocalist Geddy Lee (bass and keyboard). Drummer Neil Peart joined in 1974 and made his first appearance on the second album. Together, they’ve accrued a steadfast and diehard fan base, including one Randal Scott, who pointed out that a song not often heard, “The Camera Eye” is a highlight to watch for during this show. The album Moving Pictures, which includes this song about the cities of New York and London, is being played live in its entirety for each performance of the 2011 leg of the Time Machine Tour. Readily recognizable from classic radio, and newly beloved by fans of TV Series from “Chuck” to “South Park”, the song “Tom Sawyer” is a true Rush icon. New and old ‘Trekkies of Rock’ (aka Rush fans) planning to attend the concert can look forward to hearing new releases “Caravan” and “BU2B” (Brought Up To Believe) from the upcoming album Clockwork Angels. “Rush doesn’t get the attention of Gagas and Springsteens” commented Scott. “Today’s media is all about popularity and not about quality.” See for yourself and make plans to get to the July 10 concert in the Arena.—Dionne Charlet
Noah and the Whale + Bahamas
Monday, June 13, 10 p.m.
One Eyed Jacks, 615 Toulouse St., 569-8361
Released in March, Last Night On Earth—the third record from London-based folk rock group Noah and the Whale—has launched them into both critical acclaim and a full U.S. summer tour. A nod to Charles Bukowski’s collection of poems by the same name, the album itself is a rapturous compilation of lyrics and melodies that are rife with stories and ripe with fresh, bold perspectives on life and its infinite lessons. The first single and music video released from the album, “L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.” features singer-guitarist-songwriter Charlie Fink leaving positive, upbeat thoughts in his listeners’ minds: “You got more than money and sense, my friend,/ you got heart, and you’re going your own way.” The music behind the lyrics is soft and dreamy but still focused and thoughtful, with a medley of keys, strings—including ukulele and fiddle—light, understated drums and a host of vocal guest appearances. Looking for good vibes and better tunes on a steamy Monday night? Head to the Quarter when Noah and the Whale take the One Eyed Jacks stage with their opener, Canadian folk rock duo Bahamas. —Carolyn Heneghan
