Bud's Broiler on Calhoun Street to Close November 26 After 40 Years in Business

By: Michael Fulkerson

The grill at a popular Uptown burger joint will soon go cold. The Uptown Messenger reports that Bud’s Broiler on Calhoun Street is closing Sunday, November 26, after 40 years in business.

Jason Qader, the 62-year-old man who has owned the restaurant for the last two decades, spent Tuesday saying goodbye to longtime customers as he prepares to retire, The Messenger reported.

The spot will be closed for two to three months before it reopens as a second El Libre location. El Libre, a tiny French Quarter Cuban restaurant that opened in 2015, will open its new location at the Calhoun Street space.

Along with Cubano sandwiches, black beans, and rum cocktails, the Uptown location of El Libre will continue to sell fries and burgers in the style of Bud's, according to The Uptown Messenger. The larger Uptown space will let El Libre expand its menu.

The new El Libre will open in early 2018.
