BadBadNotGood and Ghostface Killah
SOUR SOUL
Lex Records

In a market saturated with constant re-generations of the baggy jeans, bling-bling era of hip hop, BadBadNotGood and Ghostface Killah’s recent collaborative release, SOUR SOUL, brings to the mainstream a growing trend of experimental hip-hop, blending BadBadNotGood’s signature jazzy sound with the lyrical intensity Ghostface has been bringing to the game since 1993.  With guest vocalists including MF DOOM and Danny Brown – both innovative, boundary-pushing lyricists in their own right – the album rejects the commonly held belief about the incompatibility of rap and instrumental music, opening up the potential for young musicians and lyricists to experiment with this new form.  Instrumentally, the album reflects BadBadNotGood’s unique ability to blend hip-hop oriented beats with modern jazz improvisation (for a true example of their virtuosity, check out their live rendition of Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade”), creating an introspective and mellow backdrop for Ghostface to flaunt his lyrical ability. The collaboration will be performing Saturday, March 14th at Buku Music and Arts Festival.
